OT: Strikepoint blew me away

July 18th, 2005 | by mbhunter |

Strikepoint is a handbell choir out of Duluth, MN.

Handbells are tuned brass bells that are played by snapping them in the air, causing a hard rubber clapper inside the bell to strike the bell, producing a sound. About a dozen ringers cover all of the bells; some of them play six bells at a time — three in each hand! I’m not making this up.

The combined effect of the bells is tonally very clear.

Our church started a handbell choir last year with rented bells, and we recently bought our own set. Strikepoint stopped at our church on their tour to give a concert and instruct us on how to use the bells.

Playing the heaviest of the bells is like waving a bowling ball on a stick. This isn’t music performance for couch potatoes!

I was amazed!

Their tour schedule is limited because many of the members are students or teachers. They have CDs on sale from their website.
