Baby formula for a nickel a serving

July 21st, 2005 | by mbhunter |

My wife the bargain hunter (the mighty bargain huntress?) bought a quart bottle of pre-made baby forumla for $5.27, and used a $5 coupon. Cost: $0.27 for 5-6 servings, or about a nickel a serving.

“That’s about the only way to use a formula coupon so that it’s worth it,” she told me. Using the coupon on the name-brand formula in powdered form, doesn’t beat the price for similar generic-brand powdered formula (without coupon). The pre-made formula, all other things equal, is more expensive than the powder.

But if you can use coupons on any size, usually using the coupon on the smallest size will give you the lowest unit price. (Not always, though — when it comes to pricing no store is always the cheapest and no rule always gives you the best value.) So, she made out on this one bottle of the pre-made, and bought generic powder for the rest.
