What’s the smallest check you’ve ever written?

August 15th, 2005 | by mbhunter |

I wrote one for 49 cents to the Virginia Department of Taxation today.

They are upgrading their website, so this month we pay sales & use tax by snail mail. I couldn’t recall the routing number for our business’s bank account, so I wrote a check.

Gross sales for July were $9.99. A 4% state tax (40 cents) and a 1% local tax (10 cents), minus a 3% discount on the tax due for paying on time (1 cent) brings my sales tax liability for the month of July to 49 cents.

And I paid 37 cents to mail the payment.

At least the 37 cents is a tax-deductible expense ;)
