Target’s making a killing!

August 28th, 2005 | by mbhunter |

We went to Target today for some baby safety stuff. The small food court area offers snacks, drinks, and “combo meals.”

The markup that Target must be making on the combo meals is incredible. There was a “Spaghettios Kids’ Meal” for $2.69 that included a serving of Spaghettios, a bag of chips or a small cup of applesause, and a fountain drink. Considering a can of Spaghettios costs about 69 cents retail, the applesauce 50 cents retail (though if you buy these in a pack you can get them for about half that price — in a big jar for even less), they probably get those both for about 50 cents total cost. The drink costs them a few cents to make. That’s a good 300%-400% markup!

(Oh, and they were selling 20 oz. bottled water for 79 cents. That’s $5.06 per gallon or about twice as expensive as a gallon of gas!)

hmmm, thats an interesting way to look at it. maybe i should start whining about the cost of water instead of the cost of gas!

Well, probably no need to whine too much — filtered tap water still only costs around 10 cents a gallon. ;)

I wish I could remember where I heard this question posed — it was a what-if question: “What if the price of a gallon of water were higher than the price of a gallon of gasoline?” Not just “designer” water, but tap water. How would that change our priorities?
