Blog for Relief Day — September 1st, 2005

Glenn Reynolds, aka InstaPundit, suggested that bloggers step forward today to readers in the blogosphere to contribute to the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
I won’t recap the events of the past few days. You’ve probably heard them already. I don’t need to tell you that it’s horrible. You probably know that already.
I haven’t been too up close and personal with hurricanes. Rains from Hurricane Agnes in 1972 flooded our town in the Southern Tier of New York, but I was three months old at the time. Rains from Hurricane Hugo in the late 1980s made one half-time show for our high school marching band really soggy.
As close as I’ve gotten to a hurricane was Isabel a couple of years ago. Our area was hit with the tail end of Isabel. A few downed trees, lots of debris, some minor property damage with some stories of a few isolated losses, lost power for up to a few weeks.
These are inconveniences.
Katrina makes my experience with Isabel look like a hangnail. Or maybe swallowing a piece of food the wrong way.
The victims of this hurricane need a lot of support now, and they will for many months. Many, many millions of dollars, if not billions.
Please help.
Samaritan’s Purse is “a nondenominational evangelical Christian organization providing spiritual and physical aid to hurting people around the world.” Samaritan’s Purse has already sent aid to the disaster area, but even the immediate rescue and cleanup work is far from over. Charity Navigator gives Samaritan’s Purse four out of four stars. This basically means that almost all of your donation goes to help the victims quickly.
Please make a donation. Your donation is tax-deductible.
I will match up to $250 in donations for Katrina relief (it doesn’t need to be to Samaritan’s Purse). Just send an e-mail to info AT mightybargainhunter DOT com (replace AT and DOT so that it looks like an e-mail address), with the subject line “Matching Donation,” along with your name and the charity you donated to. I will use this only to keep track of my matching — your information will not be used for any other purpose except for me to say “Thank You for Helping.”
UPDATE 12:18 PM, Sept 1, 2005: Wow! Generous donors have already exceeded the MBH.com match! Thank you for your generosity!
But there’s still more matching to be had on HittingTheBooks.com, my wife’s blog on reading, writing, and life. Her recommended charity is the Humane Society Disaster Relief Fund. She has a story about one of her dogs, Mosby, who was a tornado dog from the big F5 in Oklahoma.
So, please check out her post. We’ll pool our matching until we’ve reached $500, so continue sending your matching e-mails either to me (info AT mightybargainhunter DOT com) or to her (info AT hittingthebooks DOT com).
Thanks again for your generosity!
