Sweet Sixteen for a cool half mill

September 8th, 2005 | by mbhunter |

And I thought some pet owners spend waaaaayy too much on their pets: How about a Sweet Sixteen party for your daughter that costs a mere five hundred THOUSAND dollars??! And if that’s hard to believe — how about the report that some party planners are doing one of these PER MONTH??? Dude, my mortgage is a fraction of that!

The September 12th, 2005, issue of U.S. News and World Report has a one-pager an article entitled “Super Steep Sixteen,” describing the youthful decadence of high-end bat mitzvahs and birthday parties. I never would have thought that event planners could gross well into seven figures.

The most expensive birthday party I went to when I was a kid probably was a swimming party at a hotel. I doubt this cost more than a few hundred dollars.

(But then again, I was voted “Geek of the Week” several times during my middle school career, so I probably missed out on some parties that ran into four digits. But look at me now, baby! With my alter ego as personal finance blogger, nothing can stop my meteoric rise to fantastic fame and fortune!!)
