It was a sad, sad day in the Northern Neck of Virginia. Our discount grocery store is going out of business. Sniff sniff.
It was a little bit of a well-kept secret, but not so much — it was in business for about seven years.
I heard why they were closing. It was mainly because the money wasn’t quite as good as it used to be. The owners used to be able to buy good truckloads of slightly damaged, slightly out-of-date, or discontinued items for 20% to 30% of wholesale. They could fly through this stuff at 20% or even 50% off of the price of the undamaged items that the regular grocery stores charged.
Then competition and economies of scale crept in, and the grocery stores could sell for a higher profit to distributors. This bumped the price of the goods up to about 50% of wholesale for our owners. That, and for some reason, they couldn’t sell some of their dairy products at a discount any more. Also, the quality of the merchandise was going down.
My wife stopped by for their going out of business sale to get things at 20% off. We stocked up on whole wheat flour (bought 40-50# or so) and some other odds and ends. We also got some Moose-Tracks-like ice cream that I’m sure wasn’t as good as the real thing, but it was pretty good!
Now, we get to stand in line longer for groceries that cost 20-100% more.
Oh well — it was good while it lasted!
