Cheap musical entertainment

July 20th, 2006 | by mbhunter |

On the way home from work I stopped by Dollar General to pick up a couple of things and ran across cheap recorders. My wife and I both are musically inclined and want to encourage this in my daughter, so I bought two for $2 — one for me and one for the Punkin. She figured out how to play it (she has one note — open D — down really well).

The tuning is a little off on the lower notes, so eventually we’ll probably get a real one like this Yamaha soprano recorder. The tuning is a lot better on them. I learned to play these when I was younger. They’re a good choice for an instrument because they sound pretty good even if you’ve never played before. On the other hand, it takes months before a trumpet, violin, or oboe sounds like anything but something that needs to be put out of its misery.

A few hours of entertainment for a couple of bucks.
