In-cent-sed

July 20th, 2006 | by mbhunter |

I thought “Jim” of Blueprint for Financial Prosperity fame was a little more favorable towards our nation’s coinage. I was caught completely off guard when “Jim” dissed the Lincoln cent, calling it “useless” and all but inciting riot with his “Down with the penny!” shenanigans.

First of all, “Jim” (if that is indeed your real name) it’s not a “penny.” I would have thought that someone savvy enough to start up a Festival of Frugality would at the very least know that the U.S. Mint does not call this coin anything but a “cent.” Besides, if they’re so expensive to make and we’re wasting so terribly much money making these, why not get rid of the nickel, too? The metal content in those is worth even more relative to its face value than the cent! Put that in your pipe and smoke it. Besides, how else are you supposed to check your car’s tire tread thickness? The gap between the top of Roosevelt’s head and the rim of a dime isn’t 1/16″ like it is between the top of Lincoln’s head and the rim of a cent! You’ll blow a tire if you rely on a dime to do that job! How useful would that be, “Jim?”

“Jim,” I’ll be happy to send you my mailing address so that you can send me all of those “useless” cents of yours!

Write your U.S. Representative. Give the Lincoln Cent the Respect It Deserves!!

It’s about time someone told that guy off!!!!

BTW, I think “Jim” is just a pen name being used by Robert Kiyosaki. ;-)

“why not get rid of the nickel, too? ”

Hey now, let’s not drag the beloved nickel into all this nonsense.

I for one, have not given up on the cent yet. Or the nickel for that matter. I currently am hoarding all pre-1982 copper cents for their metal content. I am saving every nickel I get too, the metal value in nickels is more than five cents now, and no sorting required! If you get a minute check out this bunch of copper cent and nickel hoarders at this forum: http://www.hoardingcopper.com

If we give up on the penny now, what will happen when we figure out how to deflate the USD again? It’ll be like our base currency jumps from 0 to $5. :)
