Celebrate your debt reduction progress

I saw that Tricia over at Blogging Away Debt is in celebration because she just cracked $30k.  By a dollar.  She currently owes $29,999 on her credit cards, and has shaved about 20% off her debt since the beginning of March.

That isn’t easy.

It takes discipline, a lot of encouragement, and a lot of resourcefulness to dig yourself out of this kind of hole.  (I don’t have credit card debt, but I do have extra weight, and I haven’t been nearly as successful at reducing that!)  Though $30k (minus a buck) is still a good chunk of change to pay back, getting that far is a very good reason to celebrate.

And you need to celebrate your successes as you go along.  Waiting until the big goal is done until you feel good about what you’ve accomplished is not only silly but it’s disheartening.  Before you can celebrate that you’ve paid all your debt, you should celebrate at $30k, $25k, $22,758 or whatever.  Any step forward is a reason for celebration.  As well as any step backward, for that matter, because you get an opportunity to learn.

I think that reviewing your progress every quarter and celebrating (even the smallest victory)is extremely important to a healthy mental attitude. Keep it simple at first, go buy a coffee or donut (or whatever your particular weekness is) and say to yourself “Job well done.” See you next quarter!
