Now that I’ve put up over 500 posts …

… what would I have done differently?

(This post is a bit off-topic; hopefully you’ll enjoy it anyway!)

Milestones are a good time to reassess, to sharpen the blades, to think about what you’d do differently if you started over.  This exercise is good not only for clarifying the intent of the blog, but to ask the questions you need to ask before you start another one. Here’s what I would do differently with Mighty Bargain Hunter.  They mainly deal with consistency.

  • I’d post more consistently.  Sometimes I’d go on a tear and post three or four times in one day.  Other times I’d be lucky to get in two a week.  For a part-time blogger (like myself) I think a few really good posts a week plus some quickies are a good comfortable pace to maintain.  The bursts of excitement didn’t bother me much, but they leave people reading my blog wondering what’s up.  Driving on the open road is usually a lot more comfortable than stop-and-go traffic if you’re a passenger, but if you’re the driver you probably don’t notice.
  • I’d post on fewer topics more consistently.  Personal finance blogs encompass a lot.  When I started the website over a year earlier, the focus was mainly bargains — finding ways to save money on your purchases.  Since then it’s expanded to encompass, other areas of personal finance — real estate, investing, precious metals, debt reduction, etc.  Once you have people reading your blog — thank you, by the way! — for these other topics it’s hard to go back.
  • I’d look for new sources of information more consistently.  It’s unusual sources of information that help bloggers stand out.  Not that MSN and Yahoo! and the big money magazines are bad sources of information, but everyone knows about them and lots of bloggers talk about them.   My blogroll would (has!) stagnated with most of the same blogs I had three months ago.

Links to lots more thoughts on what people would do if they could start their blog over will be posted on Problogger.net.  Information for this group writing project is here.

Over 500 posts, MBH you are a posting machine. At my current pace, it will me over 3 1/2 years to get to 500. Congrats

That’s interesting, did you get some feedback from your readers about your posting consistency or is it just something you felt was like that?

Posting consistently is always a problem. I found though, that once I knew I had an audience, posting frequently became less of a problem.

Im enjoying finding all these new blogs through the writing project at problogger. If you’d like check out my post here:

I think posting frequency is a little over-rated…With RSS probably being the source of regular readers, it’s just a matter of seeing a post that you’re interested in. It’s funny that you used that driving analogy…my blog would probably be one of the worst then. :)

I’m not as consistent in posting as I should be either, I always post at least once a day, but sometimes way more, just crazy. Anyway! We did this project as well - http://lilduckduck.com/archive/187 - if you want to look!

I think you are doing a great job. Posting 1-3 times a week is great for part timer bloggers although I think it would attract more people if you did post daily.
