On the way to being a (wealthier?) morning person
September 28th, 2006 | by mbhunter |Well, it looks like my late schedule at work is officially over. I’ve developed a bit of a reputation as a night owl. (But if you watch my post times you probably already knew that.) The word in our organization is that people need to be in work as a rule by (gasp!) 10:00. This is a good two hours before I usually get in. I’m not kidding!
Our work has flex-time, but it hasn’t meant to be that flex-y, I suppose. Most of the work I do doesn’t need a lot of teamwork, so it’s been all right and my performance has been satisfactory.
Nonetheless I’ve been thinking for a while that it wouldn’t hurt me to get in a little earlier. Now I have the opportunity thrust upon me
Michael Masterson, author of Automatic Wealth and the free e-newsletter Early To Rise, has observed that getting up early is almost a universal quality of successful people. Getting up early spills over into the rest of one’s life in subtle yet powerful ways, and indicates a certain amount of self-discpline (that I’ve obviously been lacking).
Has anyone made a successful switch from night owl to early bird?

I did when I took up cycling. (The roads are clear in the mornings.) Best “trick” I used to get up — be sure you have a buddy counting on you to get up (like setting up a ride at 6 am). Then, despite the fact that you want to sleep in, you HAVE to get up or he’ll kill you later that day.

Yep, you need a buddy/a reason/a cause. When I got a dog and realized there was no way I could consistently walk her in the evenings, I started getting up earlier (around 6:30) to do it in the morning. Since she KNOWS when it’s time to go, I don’t have much choice, and I haven’t been late to work since.

Check out Steve Pavlina’s blog. He’s got an entire how-to on getting up early.
