Ukrop's! You must be from my neck of the woods (good ol' Richmond VA). I'd be interested in your thoughts on the bargain potential of Ukrop's - I haven't properly investigated and tend to stick with Kroger.

Some stores will refund the difference in price from the regular price and the savings card price, even after you've paid.

This happened to me recently at Giant (a local supermarket). I checked out at a self-checkout line, so there was no cashier there to remind me to use my savings card. (Another reason not to use self-checkout. But I digress.) I noticed that the total was higher than I thought it should be. Sure enough, the receipt said something along the lines of, "You could have saved $13.30 by using your savings card."

I went to the customer service desk and explained the situation. Without hesitation, the manager opened up the register and gave me the $13.30 in cash!

A lot of the time, you can just ask the person checking you out if you can use their card. I do this all of the time at our local grocery store. Or, you can ask the person in front of you or behind you in line...

Screw "savings cards". Ask the cashier to use the store card. If they refuse (and you are unwilling or unable to spend the time to waste the time of the store manager about the idiotic cards), ask for an application for a card and indicate you are in a hurry. They will give you the discount, and let you take the application for later return. Pitch it in route out of the store.
