This happened to me recently at Giant (a local supermarket). I checked out at a self-checkout line, so there was no cashier there to remind me to use my savings card. (Another reason not to use self-checkout. But I digress.) I noticed that the total was higher than I thought it should be. Sure enough, the receipt said something along the lines of, "You could have saved $13.30 by using your savings card." I went to the customer service desk and explained the situation. Without hesitation, the manager opened up the register and gave me the $13.30 in cash! If they refuse (and you are unwilling or unable to spend the time to waste the time of the store manager about the idiotic cards), ask for an application for a card and indicate you are in a hurry.
