Now I’ve done it!

October 17th, 2006 | by mbhunter |

I made the first non-refundable step toward becoming an auctioneer.

My wife called me up at work today to let me know that my pre-class package came in the mail.  I enjoy auctions a lot and did a brief (non-paid) auction for our church, and people thought that I was all right at the calling.  An auctioneer’s license, I reasoned, would be a good thing to have “in my back pocket” so that I don’t feel trapped in a single job.  Plus, of course, it can be lucrative.

Now that I’ve commited several hundred dollars to get the necessary training for getting licensed, and have the materials in front of me, I ask:  “What have I gotten myself into?”

My wife reassured me that even if I ended up not becoming an auctioneer that the experience would still be good — at least it would tell me that I didn’t really want to do it.  Or I could do it part-time for a while, maybe working auctions for an established house.  Or I could wave good-bye to my job and call for a living.  Who knows at this point?  I don’t.

Has anyone else taken steps into a new career?  How much preparation did you do?  Or did you just jump in?

This is an excellent thing to do. Around me, a lot of folks have supplemented their retirement with this position.

I find it gets them out and socializing and enjoying life.

    Good luck to you!

That really does sound like a lot of fun. I’ll save that for my later years though. :)

Excellent field to get involved with. I visit a lot of auctions here in Texas and it always seems that there is high demand for auctioneers.
