We’ll see how much my cheap silver really costs me

Dawn over at Frugal for Life posted an article (via Hustler $$$ Blog) on getting cheap loss-leader silver coins.

I took the bait and ordered one.  It was just as they said it would be: I could get the one-ounce coin for only the $1.95 S/H fee (by calling 1-800-989-3007), but I have to sit through a bunch of other offers that are absolutely NOT good deals and say no to all of them.  The other offers were really expensive ones, actually.

The poor woman on the other hand sounded pretty hoarse, and probably was not pleased at all to come up empty-handed after reading close to two pages of typewritten sales pitches.

HustlerMoneyBlog recommended giving out a fake phone number, but I gave out my real one because I figured that they’d verify it with their 800-number records.  This morning we got our first call from the American Historic Society, the folks who kindly sold me a silver eagle for 14% of spot.  My wife said that I wasn’t available for comment.

There is some advantage to going to a coin deal you trust and paying a hefty markup with cash.  You pay a lot more for your coins, but no one else knows about it.  Because of the nearly-free offer, my number will probably get sold to anyone who will buy a mailing list of coin collectors.  So I saved $12 — assuming I get the coin! — but I’ll be sales-pitched to death.

Maybe I’ll put my 23-month-old daughter on the phone and have her tell them “NO!” ;)

I read about that as offer as well and stayed away from it for that very reason. I joined on of those survey sites and got a bunch of spam and telemarketers and now regret signing up just to make a few bucks. Sometimes it’s just not worth it to save money on things.

I like getting telemarketers calling me, I try selling them something or I come up with some rather inventive way to keep them on the phone for a very long time. It costs the company money to talk to you so I ‘charge’ them for the agrivation of being called.

I no longer get calls from any company trying to sell me stuff other than my bank.
