Frugal butterfly wings for our daughter
February 20th, 2007 | by mbhunter |Our daughter was invited to her first outside-of-the-family birthday party this weekend. The party had a Mad Hatter Tea Party theme and the entertainer — dressed to the nines as the Queen of Hearts — had costumes available for each of the children. Our daughter dressed up as a butterfly, complete with wings.
Needless to say, it was not a happy occasion when the entertainer had to leave — with our daughter’s beloved butterfly costume.
My wife looked at the wings and said (as she does with a lot of things): “I can make that!”
Cost of a set of wings, pre-made: $18.00 plus shipping.
Cost of the wings my wife made for our daughter:
- $0.66 for two pair of knee-high stockings
- $2.50 for a package of five different colors of glitter glue
- wire, coat hangers, fabric markers, and elastic material already on hand
Grand total: $3.16. Result: a set of wings with WAY more character than Amazon’s, at 17% the cost! ![]()

Really cute. Now how I can get your wife to make a set for me?
I have no idea why people buy costumes. It’s so easy to whip up something for cheap.

Our Garden club is looking to make wings and I would love to have your method as cost is an issue.
Thanks. Carole
