Thanks for 2007 and goals for 2008

The year 2007 will be history in less than an hour here. Thank you everyone for visiting, reading, linking to, subscribing to, and commenting on Mighty Bargain Hunter this year! I’m so blessed to have you participate.
I feel a bit left out right now; I haven’t posted a comprehensive list of goals for 2008 yet! I’ve talked a little about a financial goal, which is to track my finances better. But I’m not just my finances — that would be really sad! So here are goals for other parts of my life as well. I’ll give a general statement of the goal, a measure of progress toward that goal, and specific actions I will take to progress toward the goal.
- I want a closer relationship with God. I play on my church’s worship team just about every week, but I’m really struggling with maintaining a daily relationship with God and His Son Jesus Christ. I’ll begin by reading the Bible or listening to it every day (my wife got me Johnny Cash reading the New Testament for Christmas). My goal with this is to read the entire Bible this coming year.
- I want to track my finances better. I’ve outlined specifics of the goal here, but basically this involves “clearing out” my receipts regularly (10x month, no more than 5 days between clearings) and having less than 10% of our cash transactions “miscellaneous.” This involves just sitting down with Quicken, You Need A Budget, or whatever, and doing it. The fruit of this hopefully will be improved awareness of what’s costing us the most money without a good return
- I want to lose fifty pounds. This is also a goal of fellow blogger No Credit Needed. To do this I’ll start doing cardiovascular exercise 100 minutes a week, and add in weight training and more cardio as I can. I’ll stop eating sweets at work (they always seem to have candy somewhere, and I always manage to find it.) I’ll continue improving what I take in, and take care of my spine.
- I want to become a licensed auctioneer. This is just procrastination taking its toll. I need to study for the state exam and take it.
- I want to develop and expand the reach of this blog. A measurable goal here is to achieve 3,000 RSS subscribers (right now it’s a little over 2,000). To do this I’ll respond to your comments more (thank you for commenting!), write more content that you want to read, and get involved on your blogs (if you’re a blogger).
- I want my side businesses to cover my mortgage payment again. They did earlier in the year, but the rules changed on how website owners could monetize their sites, so it’s back to the drawing board for me. This involves learning how to monetize my site better than I did before (without scaring everyone away of course, or even a few of you!) This is certainly possible.
- I want to develop the habit of getting things out of my head onto paper, and doing them promptly. AI’ve spun my wheels for a good chunk of my adult life trying to get organized. Zen To Done seems to be a simplified way of attacking Getting Things Done
, so I’ll have as a goal mastering the first two habits, which encompass the above goal.
Anyway, I’ll check in here periodically with these goals (at least once every three months).
Happy New Year, and thanks again for reading! God bless you.

Awesome goals.
I think I share almost all of them. . . I just don’t have the confidence to announce it to the world. Good luck in the year ahead.

Hey, I just found your blog recently. Thanks for the tips & insights. I’m totally with you on goals 1, 2 and 3.
Last year I lost 35 pounds with the help of a personal trainer who made my workouts effective, interesting, and varied. Those were the things lacking in my program before. It was expensive but worth it for a season. Then I allowed work to take over my life again in the fall and gained 20 back. Arg. MUST KILL WORKAHOLISM B4 IT KILLS ME!
Part of the workaholism stems from paying for a gradual climb in consumer debt. I had none for about 15 years but somehow it crept up on me in the past few. So 2008 will be the year of wise choices and paying it off without working myself into either a heart attack, diabetes, or nervous breakdown. LOL.
And I have tried reading or listening to the Bible in toto but have never been able to stay engaged, though my heart’s in the right place. So this year I’m going to try reading at least the whole NT of The Message because it doesn’t trigger the religiosity/performance-based-salvation thing for me. BTW, my favorite Christian podcast/blogs are Lifestream.org and TheGodJourney.com. You might want to check them out this year sometime whether you enjoy the Christian life inside the box or out.
Whatever we do this year, may it spring from love and grace. Let’s don’t should all over ourselves in 2008!

I think it’s a great goal to have over 2000 feeds. You’re doing great. I’m in the 40’s now, but I plan on taking blogging a lot more seriously this year. Good luck.

Good luck with these—especially the weight goal, that can be tricky. Remember the same tips as personal finance–discipline, long-term, etc.

I’ve been trying to finish the Bible as well…I trailed off at the halfway mark. My church has a weekly bible reading pamphlet they hand out listing the week’s bible verses to read as well as a few questions to answer (to prove you read it). You are supposed to hand in the completed questions during the next service.
I have the stacks of reading pamphlets that I need to get back to reading…I intend to finish it in 2008!
Have a great new year

“I want a closer relationship with God”. What a good and special goal. I never come across goal that related to region. I think this year, I must set one for myself.
Thanks for your inspiration.

I have some of the same goals as you. I’m not going to try to read my Bible through in a year. I’ve never been able to do it. But, I will read several books (of the Bible) several times as I tend to study more than I read casually.
You’re idea of the Bible on CD is a good one.
I also have a goal of losing some weight. And I’ve started my blog to help others in our Sunday School class with this same goal. I hope you will check it out and see if the posts help you with your goal, too.
If you like it, maybe a mutual link would help us both with traffic. Thanks and good luck with your goals.
