Congratulations! You can now keep your money

April 25th, 2008 | by mbhunter |

April 23rd was Tax Freedom Day in the United States this year. That’s the day that your taxes for the year will be paid, assuming that every penny up until that point went to pay taxes. In other words, it’s the day that you stop working for the government and the day you start working for yourself.

Almost four months out of twelve. That seems like a lot. Actually, depending on the state, you might not even be done yet. I’m done today. My parents-in-law in WV were done over two weeks ago. My sister in NY won’t be done until Cinco de Mayo. And my friends in NJ will be free two days after that.

India’s folks were free two weeks before even Alaska. And Israelis still have more than three months left to go. Ouch.

Anyway, congratulations to my fellow American citizens. You’ve paid Uncle Sam for 2008. Now put a little bit away for yourself.

I am not sure how long I have to go here in Virginia, but I think I may have already made it. I wonder if you calculations figure in the Federal rebate most americans will be getting in the next week or two?

Eric: Yes I believe the calculations do take the stimulus check into account. It’s a little earlier this year than last because of that.

That’s a pretty depressing thought! Hopefully we all have adjusted our tax withholdings so we’re not actually doing something similar. :)
