A first-class marketing idea

May 12th, 2008 | by mbhunter |

This marketing idea is inexpensive to implement, and pretty much guaranteed that I’d follow through with the little favor that was asked. It’s really, really smart. (No, I didn’t think of it.)

Every family in our church received a sheet of twenty one-cent stamps (cost: $0.20) stapled to a sheet of paper with the following:

Time is valuable.

Are 20 cents worth of stamps worth 15 of more minutes of your time?

We would like to think so …

On Monday, May 12 the US Postal Service is raising the price of stamps. We know that a trip to the Post Office for one-cent stamps can be both time-consuming and a little frustrating. That is why the Outreach Committee has made this trip for you.

We would ask that you take the 15 minutes you may have spent going to the Post Office and put it to invaluable use. Please use this time to prayerfully consider being part of one of NLCC’s upcoming Outreach Opportunities.

And then the list of opportunities followed: a vacation Bible school, a camp opportunity, and a missions trip to Cofradia, Mexico.

That was a really smart way to grab people’s attention: It solved a problem. We did actually need to buy some one-cent stamps to bring the comic book stamps we have up to code (the new Postal Code, that is). It is inconvenient, frustrating, and a little time-consuming. Not really expensive, but annoying, for exactly the reasons that they mentioned.

Imagine if the pitch was just to visit a website or sign up for a newsletter. This idea is money.

There still might be time for businesses to capitalize on this price increase, but even if it’s too late for this one, there will be another one, probably soon.
