Two deals: Food Lion and Restaurant.com

June 18th, 2008 | by mbhunter |

I don’t know how widespread this offer is but Food Lion grocery store is offering a 10% premium on gift card purchases of $300 or more. This is a stimulus-check promotion that’s good until mid-August, at least in our store. I’ll take an extra $30 in groceries since we shop there frequently. (I may even be able to get an extra rebate from my Chase PerfectCard™ Mastercard® for this purchase.) Has anyone else seen this deal in their Food Lion?

Also, Restaurant.com is running a coupon special for 50% off its dining certificates — only $5 for a $25 dining certificate. That’s an 80% discount to face value. (Some restrictions apply.) This same coupon code also works for 50% off its Dinner of the Month Club. The Dinner of the Month is one $25 Dining Certificate per month, and the discounts to face value are even better:

Plan Regular price Promo price Cert. Face Value **Bonus** Pct. off Face Value
3 Months $30 $15 $75 $10 82%
6 Months $60 $30 $150 $25 83%
12 Months $120 $60 $300 $50 83%

Just enter the code SIZZLING and you’ll get the discount. This offer expires June 22nd, so be sure to check it out over at Restaurant.com now!

Kroger stores are offering a similar deal were you can put up to $1200 on a gift card and they will add an additonal 10% for free. My family took full advantage of this offer and used a cashback credit card to purchase the gift card to get an additional 1% savings.

This is an amazing deal if you typically spend this much at the participating supermarket. It’s like getting a risk-free return of 10%. Where can you get that kind of return in the markets? More if you consider it’s after tax and an additional 1% if you use a cash back credit card.

Note that Kroger’s has several different branded stores where this special is good at. My local store is Fred Meyer’s and they’re located throughout the Pacific Northwest. The Kroger deal expires July 30th.
