I only shop the sale items or "Manager's Specials" at Kroger, with the Kroger Plus Card (store loyalty card) and try to match sale items with coupons. I average a 50% savings per trip before the 10% bonus for using the gift card. I bought $990 of gift cards at Kroger for $900 (in increments of $300) and paid for them with my cash back AmEx (extra 1%) without any trouble, but they said the last day was 7/31. I had brought cash just in case but since they took credit I got an extra 1% from Discover. That is terrible that you had such a hassle. I hate it when stores don't know their own rules. The customer service were a little confused by it but I was able to purchase 1320 worth of gift cards for 1200 and I didn't even receive a stimulus check. The people most likely to be able to truly afford buying a $330 gift card -- or four of them -- for $300 each wouldn't have qualified for the stimulus check.
