Dont forget that you can use the gift cards for gas too. Since I already got my rewards on my CC when I purchased it another 3 cents off a gallon is nice too. I purchased at Kroger

I bought $990 of gift cards at Kroger for $900 (in increments of $300) and paid for them with my cash back AmEx (extra 1%) without any trouble, but they said the last day was 7/31. I only shop the sale items or "Manager's Specials" at Kroger, with the Kroger Plus Card (store loyalty card) and try to match sale items with coupons. I average a 50% savings per trip before the 10% bonus for using the gift card.

Andy, that's a good point. I'm spending down that card at FL before I use any other form of payment.

My Kroger (Fry's) had a sign saying I could pay with cash, check, debit or credit. I had brought cash just in case but since they took credit I got an extra 1% from Discover.

That is terrible that you had such a hassle. I hate it when stores don't know their own rules.

Our local Bennigan's offerd an extra 25% if you purchased a gift card. $20 got you $25.

Well, it looks like $20 got you $0. If you are going to purchase gift cards, make sure you use them quickly.

Kroger had the same deal. The customer service were a little confused by it but I was able to purchase 1320 worth of gift cards for 1200 and I didn't even receive a stimulus check. Sounds like you just talked to some really confused people at Food Lion.

The Kroger company was making the same offer. I went in to my local Kroger store (King Soopers) and had no problems getting the bonus using my debit card to pay for the gift cards.

I can see why they want the check. The people most likely to be able to truly afford buying a $330 gift card -- or four of them -- for $300 each wouldn't have qualified for the stimulus check. They don't want to subsidize the people who can most afford to pay full price.

I was surprised when my grocery store (different chain) made it sound like you could only use a physical stimulus check for 10% off gift cards. Money is money, right? Now not only do they not require the actual check, they do not require any proof-of-stimulus, nor do they seem to track who got what, outside an individual transaction. I wondered if this "two-step" was a plan to get as many stimulus and post-stimulus dollar as possible, but probably just chaos all around.
