Link roundup: Entrepreneur edition
August 2nd, 2008 | by mbhunter |
This week the Money Blog Network put together its monthly Group Writing Project on advice for new entrepreneurs. The links this week will highlight my favorite quotes from these articles:
- Get Rich Slowly: "Start slowly … By starting small, you’re able to control growth and focus on what’s important."
- Free Money Finance: "Don’t quit your day job until you’ve got at least a decent start on your new business."
- Five Cent Nickel: "Be patient … Success takes time, so try not to get discouraged early on."
- Consumerism Commentary: "Don’t expect to have more time with your family … if you are trying to build a unique business that provides an original product or service or if you are trying to be the best at what you do, you will have less time for friends and family than you had when all you had to worry about was your day job."
- No Credit Needed: "Do something you love … Find something you love - and then look for ways to monetize."
- All Financial Matters: "Balance income and expenses … Every business must bring in more money than it spends to survive, and individuals shouldn’t spend more than they earn."
- Wise Bread: Ask important questions: "What is your product or service? Who are your customers? When will things get done? When are bills due and when do you get paid?"
- Digerati Life: "Cater to your strengths … you’ll have a better chance at success with a small business if you do something you enjoy and love, and that you’re good at doing."
- Blunt Money: "Have an exit strategy in place … before you even START your business, figure out how you’re going to STOP it."
- No Debt Plan: "Keep an idea notebook with you at all times. Inspiration for new ideas can happen at any moment."
- Personal Finance Analyst: "Keep good records so you’ll be prepared when tax time rolls around."
- Think Your Way to Wealth: "Don’t wait for the perfect time. The perfect time will always be sometime in the future. Go ahead and start now."
Mighty Bargain Hunter also participated in two carnivals this week:
- You Need a Budget included my financial truth post in this week’s Carnival of Personal Finance.
- Can I Get Rich on a Salary? included my "earn free gift cards for searching the web" post in this week’s Money Hacks Carnival.
Have a great rest of the weekend!

I’ve been living much of the “entrepreneur” advice cited above (for about 3 years now !). Combining my two passions, personal finance and application development, I’ve created what I believe is the first multi-goal/responsibility financial forecasting tool for the average person (i.e. simple and quick !).
Anyway, I agree with most of the above advice, which laughs in the face of the “IPO / Captain of Industry” route that leads to disappointment for so many people. I also think it is important to remember that doing it on your own means a LOT of skills to master, so, don’t expect overnight riches !

Todd A: Right, initially you become not only CEO but also secretary, accountant, marketing, customer service, etc. etc.
