I am so glad there is a published list out there. In my state there are a couple listed but I forgot there was one in the town I went to college. I am going to email them the name of it so they can add it to their list.

I do stuggle with buying food at a lot of the stores because I normally buy items that are Organic. I try to buy papertowels, napkins, baggies at these overstock stores though which can save some serious dough.

I agree – even if the budget is really tight, there are other areas where you can reduce your costs. Food quality is the last thing I’m willing to sacrifice, because I know that my health (and the health of my family) is one of my most important assets.

I will only go as far as buying snacks from these discount grocery stores. Any other type of food may get you sick.

When you can find these places it’s great,I buy all my bakery items at the day old outlets and i know it saves me thousands a year,The only thing you have to watch out for at the discount grocers is that sometimes the products are out of date,so if the cans don’t look right-Don’t buy it because what’s inside may or may not make you sick, but it’s better to be safe than to risk food poisoning

We have similar stores in Australia. They are called “Not quite right” or NQR. Poor choice of name I think but they sell essentially the same, good and products, including food that is past its use by date mostly.

They have been around for some years so much be successful.

You can go ‘up bush’ (up the country to US citizens) and buy from farmers much cheaper too here.

What about farmers markets? With the tough economic times I’m afraid a lot of people are looking for the cheapest groceries however they don’t take into account the cost to their health that these “low cost” packaged food items cause.
