IT'S A GOOD PRICE - BUT DO I NEED IT?

Thank you for reading! This issue promises to help you save lots of money by keeping it in your pocket in the first place!

!%@#^*$ SCREECHING BRAKE SOUND %(*@^$%

"WHOA, JOHN! I thought you were all about bargain hunting! This sounds like you're a Mighty Miser!" you might be thinking.

Now before you run away screaming in terror, I am here to show you how to get things for lots less. But....

....if you don't have the money available when you run across these bargains, because you've SPENT it all, you won't be able to take advantage of deals when they roll around!

Don't deprive yourself -- just think twice!

Suppose I see a Miles Davis CD with the happy "Good Price" sticker on it. It's half of what it usually costs. I pick up the CD.

"Do you need that CD, hun-bun?" my hunny asks.

"But it's a GOOD PRICE hun -- I don't get these unless they're a GOOD PRICE!" I say.

"I haven't heard you listen to the other 19 Miles Davis CDs you have!"

She caused me to think twice about getting that CD. Yes, it was a good price, but I didn't need it since I already had a bunch at home. I just kept $6.99 in my pocket for something else that's more useful.

(By the way -- this actually happened. I'm not making this up!)

Yes it's on clearance -- but do we need it?

Clearance sales are great places to find bargains. My Mom used to get candy for 90% off at Fay's right after the big candy holidays (Christmas, Valentine's Day, Easter, and Halloween). That's TEN for the price of one!

Problem is, she sometimes bought so much of it that we couldn't go through it fast enough, even with freezing some of it. We always ate enough of it that we "came out ahead," but we usually ended up throwing some away.

Wouldn't it be better to get five bags at a dime apiece and actually EAT five bags of candy that taste good than to get twenty bags at the same price, eat five that taste good, force down three that are freezer-burned or stale, then chuck the rest because the Easter candy starts to look like Christmas candy? Was the extra $1.50 you spent on the candy worth it?

So where's the balance?

Bargains are a beauty to behold. Before cutting off other shoppers and loading up your cart, though, briefly consider the following:

  • Is this really a good price? (This is the subject of another article.)
  • Do I really need this item, or am I buying it just because it's 90% off?
  • Can I get through all of this stuff I'm buying before it goes bad?
  • Can I "gift" this item near in the future, and will it be something I would want to give?
  • Can I re-sell this item near in the future for more than I'm paying for it now?
If you're hemming and hawing about these questions, odds are that you probably should pass this one up because,

  • It may go on super clearance again, and
  • You'll have the cash to catch something that you really need or want!
